Sinatra. The name is synonymous with Rat Pack, Mafia (side note: anyone who worked in show business during that time ran into the mafia, since most of the “gangsters” ran the speakeasies and later night clubs), the Kennedys and all things swing. One reporter of TIME once wrote “In Sinatra we don’t just see one man; we see every man.” I’ve been a fan of Frank since I was 12 and feel like I know him; his music has given voice to my feelings when most words didn’t work. I’m not sure if Tina or Nancy will read this, or if they were in on this project, but if they did they couldn’t have done better. Frank appeared on Major Bows (a talent competition in the 1930’s) in 1935, made his first track in 1939 with Harry James and the rest is history. Nancy once said about her father “he doesn’t need to write his autobiography; he sings it.” This collection, which guides the listener over his six decade career does just that. I will say that Frank was certainly one of the most complex and controversial recording artists of the 20th Century. At the same time, he WAS the soundtrack for the 20th century. Thankfully, he did make peace with his Catholic roots toward the end. All my Love Frank, can’t wait to listen again.
